Deb & Jess

Deb & Jess

San Francisco, California. (USA). 2000.

In the delivery room, three generations of women witnessed the birth of Mateo: the child’s mothers, his aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. In a two week period, there were “two births”, the first was born to Jess, and had a successful liver transplant after a five-year wait. Seven days later Mateo was born from the womb of her partner Deb.
They are registered as a de facto couple since 1997 and they celebrated it as though it were a wedding, with both families taking part.
Deb was artificially inseminated from a sperm bank, with sperm chosen from an unknown donor. Mateo (the son) will be able to find out the identity of the donor when he turns eighteen,
Deb had been married previously, but she was divorced.
